Margaret Knit Top
The Margaret is a special piece to me, imbued with the memory and nostalgia of family history.
Margaret was my grandmother. This piece is a recreation of a top that was hand knitted by her for my mother, which was eventually passed down to me. It still sits in my drawer today. I always loved its chunky, lumpy texture and the mix of yarn colours that wove together as one. It was beautiful in its simplicity, in a way that speaks to the quality of things from a time now past. Throwing it on with jeans has been my favourite way to wear it for many years.
Margaret was English born, she met my grandfather Jack in the war. Jack was from Moose Jaw, Canada. They married and raised seven children together living in Vancouver, Canada. Margaret, better known to me as 'Grammie', taught me to crochet and begrudgingly allowed me to go through her collections of buttons and laces. She imparted to me her love of growing plants and flowers. This piece is a tribute to her.
The Margaret is a relaxed fit top crafted in lumpy cotton yarn, knitted together in a mix of colours and thicknesses to re create this simple yet elegant piece.
